The Crazies

Rather than watch the Academy awards tonight I decided to watch an actual movie instead. I’d been wanting to see the remake of ‘The Crazies’ for a while (though Timothy Olyphant needs to start taking roles that aren’t law enforcement officers), and with Mike being sick and nothing planned it seemed a good night for it.

‘The Crazies’ is a remake of an old George A. Romero film. Although some write-ups of it mention zombies, it’s not a zombie flick and contains no actual zombies. It does contain the sharp social commentary that Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” also had. Again, it’s the actions of the living (or uninfected) which stand out as more horrific than the monsters of the piece.

The basic plot of ‘The Crazies’ is that something happens in a small town which starts people acting erratically and then violently. The military knows what’s going on and move to quarantine the town. Chaos ensues.

I can’t say how it compares to the original. I remember seeing the original a few years ago, though it was so low budget (and perhaps the transfer was so bad) that most of what I remember of it is the massive headache I got from watching it. This is a well made production, easy to watch, no headaches.

All in all I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed having the theater entirely to myself. And I enjoyed finding the theater lobby empty, as I left the movie that featured an empty, wrecked town. The only sound in the lobby was the slushy machine slowly, pointlessly rotating.

I’ll check on the Oscars tomorrow. I hope Kathryn Bigelow wins. For now I’m glad I went out to see a movie.
